Data on a Samsung phone can be protected when it is in “maintenance mode”

The new privacy function, which is available for the Galaxy S21 and S22 phones, can restrict access to confidential information and online accounts while the device is being repaired.
It can be unsettling to give your smartphone to a repair shop because it has access to all of your sensitive data. In order to restrict access while the phone is being repaired, Samsung has created a new feature(Opens in a new window).
The One UI 5 software, which is currently rolling out, is operating on Samsung Galaxy S21 and S22 devices, and the feature is named “Maintenance mode” (Opens in a new window).
Only preinstalled apps can be utilized while the device is in maintenance mode, according to Samsung. This includes photographs, messages, and accounts.

Until the phone’s original owner unlocks it, maintenance mode will be in effect. Once Maintenance mode is terminated, all software modifications made to the phone—such as downloads, setting changes, or the creation of new accounts—will be erased.

When you send your smartphone in for repair, Samsung explained, “Maintenance Mode is a technique of generating a distinct user account so that they may handle core operations without being able to access any of your sensitive information.”
Prior to deploying it in China in September, the business tested the feature in South Korea in July of last year. Over the next months, Samsung now intends to globally push out the new privacy mode to all applicable users.
The Maintenance mode option should be located at the bottom of the Battery and device care menu in Settings, where users can access the feature. The owner only needs to restart the phone after turning on the function to start limiting access to their personal information.

Without a doubt, hackers and security experts will attempt to test the security of Maintenance mode. Due to the Samsung Knox security platform, the business is certain that a phone’s data would be protected. However, the business advises consumers to make a backup of their personal data before turning on Maintenance Mode, just in case.
In the future, Samsung wants to add more Galaxy devices to the Maintenance mode.
